The environmental importance of the land over which the CWLIDB operates has long been recognised and large areas are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
This conservation interest can be very strongly influenced by the Board's activities; indeed, much of the conservation interest is dependent on the Board's operations. The Board has always tried to manage its operations to minimise adverse environmental impact, and has a long history of working with conservation agencies and organisations throughout its area in pursuit of this aim.
Through its Conservation Policy it is now re-examining its activities to seek ways, not only to ensure minimal environmental impact but also to see where it might be able to enhance conservation interests.
