In addition to its statutory maintenance works carried out under the authority of the Land Drainage acts 1991 & 1994, the Caldicot & Wentlooge Levels IDB undertakes a wide variety of Private Works (rechargeable works) to keep its specialist plant and operatives fully employed throughout the year.

These activities earn additional revenue for the Board which allows Drainage Rates to be kept at a reasonable level. Without this additional income stream, more money would have to be raised through higher rates or increased precept payments from the relevant Local Authorities. Therefore ongoing private works are of considerable benefit to all who contribute financially, either directly or indirectly, to the Water Level Management of the Gwent Levels.
